Birth Chart Explained

A birth chart (natal chart) is a map of where the planets were when you were born.

What you need for a birth chart

A birth chart uses your birth date, time and place. An uncertain birth time can change the rising sign and house placements. This page is an explainer, not a chart calculator.

Sun, moon and rising sign

Astrology uses the sun, moon and ascendant as different symbolic lenses for identity, emotional needs and first impressions. Read them together rather than treating a sun sign as a complete description of a person.

Reading a natal chart carefully

Begin with a few placements and notice how their themes relate to your experience. A natal chart is part of an interpretive tradition, not a scientific diagnosis or a guarantee about your life.

If you do not know your birth time

Keep the uncertainty visible. A date and place may support some chart discussion, but do not present an exact ascendant or house placement as confirmed from a guessed time. Start with an explainer and check the details you can verify. This site does not calculate or store a natal chart on this page.

A useful order for learning

Learn what a placement means in its own tradition, then compare a small number of themes rather than collecting dozens of labels. Write down where an interpretation fits your experience and where it does not. A chart should not become a reason to dismiss your own observations or excuse someone else's conduct.
